Hand carfted Bant’s Carn

Museum and interpretation designers Imagemakers are pleased to announce:

A new piece for the Isles of Scilly Museum - a handcrafted block puzzle of Bant’s Carn, made by local musician and maker, Piers Lewin, on St Agnes.

The model is built from four island timbers: elm, Monterey pine, pittosporum and coprosma. The elm and pine came from trees blown down in storms on St Mary’s, while the others are hedging plants that help shelter Scillonian flower fields. The model will allow visitors to get a sense of the inside of the Bronze Age tomb at Halangy Down on St Mary’s  - a chambered cairn topped with four enormous capstones.

After several visits to Bant’s Carn, and studying aerial photos and English Heritage charts, Piers recreated the entrance grave in eleven beautifully carved, sanded and oiled pieces, all made by hand in his workshop on St Agnes.
